Overview

What this plate is used for

ASTM B265 covers strip, sheet and plate of titanium and titanium alloys. It sets out the chemical composition ranges for each grade, the mechanical property requirements, and the dimensional and flatness tolerances that apply to the delivered product. When a drawing references B265, those are the conditions the receiving party will check against.

The three grades covered here sit in different positions. Gr1 is the lowest-strength, most formable pure grade and is chosen when formability and corrosion resistance dominate. Gr2 is the general-purpose pure titanium grade and the one most commonly ordered. Gr5 (TC4) is the alloy grade for structural use, with materially higher strength and different fabrication behavior.

The standard defines the requirements; the MTC is what proves they were met. Each batch is identified by heat and lot number, with chemistry and applicable test results recorded against that number. Keeping the marking on the material consistent with the certificate is a simple step that prevents most disputes about identity at the receiving end.

How to choose the right plate

Name the standard on the drawing, not just the grade. Gr2 is a grade; ASTM B265 is the specification that defines what that grade must meet. If only the grade appears on the drawing, agree with your customer whether B265 is implied before the order is placed, so the certificate issued at delivery is accepted without question.

Match the grade to the duty, not the price list. Gr1 buys extra formability, Gr2 buys general corrosion resistance, and Gr5 buys strength. Moving up the list for the wrong reason adds cost; moving down it can fail an inspection. A short conversation about the working condition before ordering avoids both.

Plan third-party inspection into the lead time. If an inspector is required, the inspection date has to sit inside the production window rather than after it. Tell us about it when the order is placed and we schedule around it; adding it afterwards usually means re-opening the batch.
