ASTM B265 titanium plate

TC4, also called Grade 5 or Ti-6Al-4V, is the workhorse titanium alloy. When the part has to carry load or save weight, this is the grade most engineers specify. We supply it as rolled plate and cut or machine it to your drawing.

Overview

What this plate is used for

TC4 is a titanium-aluminium-vanadium alloy with roughly 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium — hence the Ti-6Al-4V name. Compared with pure titanium, it offers materially higher strength at only a modest increase in density, which is what makes it the default choice wherever weight saving has a measurable payoff.

Plate is available in the rolled condition and can be supplied annealed or as-rolled depending on what the next stage of processing needs. Common stock covers thinner sheet through to medium-thick plate; thicker sections are reviewed against current mill availability. We confirm the supply state before cutting so the delivered material matches the drawing specification.

The trade-off is that TC4 is less forgiving than pure titanium to cut and machine. It work-hardens and runs hotter at the tool, which affects lead time and finish. For that reason we prefer to receive the finished drawing early, so cutting method and any pre-machining can be built into the same production run rather than added on afterwards.

How to choose the right plate

Use TC4 only when strength or weight is the deciding factor. If the part is a lining, a tank wall, or a duct that mostly needs to resist corrosion, pure titanium is usually the better spend. TC4 pays for itself in brackets, frames, load-bearing panels and anything that rotates or cycles under load.

Plan machining into the order. TC4 work-hardens and needs sharper tooling, slower feeds and proper coolant control. If your drawing calls for milled pockets, drilled holes or tight tolerances, having those done at source is generally quicker and cleaner than taking a raw plate and setting up a separate machining run.

Check the heat treatment condition on your drawing. The properties of TC4 depend on whether it is supplied annealed, solution-treated or stress-relieved. We confirm the required condition before cutting so the material we ship is the one your design actually calls for.
