Gr9 Titanium Tube for Aerospace Hydraulic Lines | Ti-3Al-2.5V, Annealed & CWSR

Meta Description: Gr9 (Ti-3Al-2.5V) titanium tube for aerospace hydraulic lines — annealed & CWSR, ASTM B338/B861, AMS 4943/4944 reference, cut-to-length, EN 10204 3.1 heat-traceable. Condition picked by bend radius, not habit. Quote in 24h.

Overview — Why Gr9, Not Gr2 or Gr5

Gr9 (Ti-3Al-2.5V, UNS R56320) is the hydraulic-line alloy. It sits in the sweet spot:

  • ~20–50% stronger than CP Gr2, at nearly the same weight (4.48 g/cm³)
  • Far more bendable and flareable than Gr5 (Ti-6Al-4V)
  • Weldable by GTAW without routine post-weld heat treatment in most lines
  • Half the weight of stainless 321/304 hydraulic tubing for the same pressure class

So when an airframe engineer says "I need titanium hydraulic tube," nine times out of ten the drawing says Gr9 — the question is which condition, not which grade.

Annealed vs CWSR — The Real Decision

This is where most enquiries go vague. Pick the temper from the bend radius, not from price.

Property Annealed (AMS 4943 / ASTM B338-B861) CWSR (AMS 4944)
UTS (min) ~620 MPa (90 ksi) ~860 MPa (125 ksi)
YS (min) ~483 MPa (70 ksi) ~725 MPa (105 ksi)
Elongation ≥15% ≥10%
Bend radius 3D comfortable 5D+, less springback forgiveness
Use case Formed runs, flare joints, prototypes High-pressure straight runs 3000–8000 psi
Wall benefit Predictable springback, easy flaring Thinner wall at same burst pressure

Rule of thumb: annealed for bends and flares, CWSR for pressure and weight. We don't push CWSR on a 3D bend — it'll fight your bender.

Springback Is a Metallurgy Problem, Not a Bender Problem

Gr9's low elastic modulus (~100 GPa) means it springs back harder than steel. Two things decide whether your CNC bender nails the angle:

  1. Uniform anneal: vacuum-annealed, fine equiaxed α+β grain → predictable over-bend angle
  2. Oxygen on the cert: run close to the 0.15% O ceiling and you gain strength but lose ductility — bends get cranky. We cite actual O value on MTC, not just "pass."

That's why we treat the MTC as a bending manual, not a shipping formality.

Standard Map (Don't Mix Them Up)

Spec What it governs
ASTM B338 Condenser/HX tube (also quoted for industrial hydraulic lines)
ASTM B861 Seamless titanium pipe/tube (industrial pressure reference)
AMS 4943 Annealed Gr9 hydraulic tubing (aerospace)
AMS 4944 CWSR Gr9 hydraulic tubing (aerospace, high pressure)
AMS 4945 3000–8000 psi hydraulic system reference

We supply to the spec your PO names. Industrial B338/B861 for plant retrofits; AMS references quoted with mill cert scope confirmed per edition.

Stock & Cut Scope

Item Range Note
OD 2–38mm (capillary to medium lines) Common 6.35 / 8 / 10 / 12.7 / 19.05mm
Wall 0.4–2.5mm CWSR thin-wall to annealed thicker wall
Condition Annealed / CWSR State on PO — not interchangeable
Length Cut-to-length 50mm–6m Plain / chamfer / flare-ready ends
Surface Bright annealed / pickled Iron-free finish, no oxide scale

Gr9 rotates through stock; live heat confirmed before PI. Non-standard wall → mill lead time quoted honest, no "always on shelf" bluff.

Technical Baseline (Annealed, Typical)

Parameter Value
Grade Gr9 / Ti-3Al-2.5V / R56320 / W.Nr 3.7194
Density 4.48 g/cm³
Modulus ~100–107 GPa
UTS / YS / Elong. ≥620 / ≥483 / ≥15% (annealed)
CWSR UTS / YS / Elong. ≥860 / ≥725 / ≥10%
Chemistry (max) Al 2.5–3.5, V 2.0–3.0, Fe≤0.25, O≤0.15
OD tol Per B861/B338 class, ±0.13mm small OD
Cut length tol +3~6.4mm / −0 standard cut-length

Cut-to-Length for Hydraulic Runs

  1. PO states: AMS or ASTM edition + condition (ann/CWSR) + OD×wall×len
  2. Pull tagged heat; log heat number before cut
  3. Square-cut / chamfer / flare-ready deburr (inside + outside)
  4. Plastic caps both ends, PE sleeve
  5. ECT + hydrostatic per PO NDT matrix
  6. MTC 3.1 drafted against mother-heat; O-content line called out explicitly

NDT & Certification

  • 100% Eddy Current (ECT) on welded; seamless per PO NDT matrix (UT + ECT)
  • Hydrostatic per B338/B861 stress basis when specified
  • Flattening / flaring sample reports on request
  • EN 10204 Type 3.1 — issued by the original tube mill's independent inspection function, heat-matched
  • Actual chemistry (incl. O, Fe, N, H) + mechanical pull-test values on cert
  • 3.2 (SGS/BV/TÜV) at buyer cost; NADCAP/AS9100 doc scope confirmed per issuer

Bending & Welding Notes (Shop-Level, Not Marketing)

  • GTAW with full argon backing — pool, root, cool zone all shielded
  • Any color on the bead = contamination signal, not cosmetics
  • Generous bend radius + stress relief after forming = normal practice
  • CWSR: expect 5D+ minimum bend radius; annealed: 3D feasible with correct over-bend
  • WPS/PQR qualified by your ASME/aircraft MRO shop — we supply clean tube + cert, not the weld procedure

Applications We Actually See

  • Aircraft hydraulic transmission lines (landing gear, flight controls)
  • Fuel & pneumatic lines (low temp swing, lightweight requirement)
  • APU & engine ancillary routing
  • UAV / eVTOL high-pressure fluid lines
  • Racing hydraulic / brake lines (CWSR favored)
  • Ground-test rigs mirroring airframe spec

What We Won't Claim

  • No "AS9100-certified factory" unless your PO names the audited entity — we confirm issuer scope, not assume it
  • No "approved for Boeing/Airbus" — airframe acceptance is the OEM/MRO QA call, not ours
  • No "zero springback" — Gr9 springs; we make it predictable
  • No trader MTC passed as mill 3.1

FAQ — Gr9 Aerospace Hydraulic Tube

Q1: Annealed or CWSR — which do I need?
A: Bends + flares → annealed (AMS 4943). 3000–8000 psi straight runs, weight-critical → CWSR (AMS 4944). Tell us bend radius, we'll advise.

Q2: Why does oxygen content matter so much?
A: O drives strength and kills ductility near the 0.15% ceiling. We print actual O value on the MTC so your bender can predict springback.

Q3: Can you supply to AMS 4944 directly?
A: We quote Gr9 CWSR to the AMS edition your PO cites; mill cert scope + NDT matrix confirmed before cutting. We don't self-declare "aerospace approved."

Q4: Is B338 enough for aircraft lines?
A: B338 covers industrial HX/hydraulic tube. Aircraft lines usually name AMS 4943/4944 — we align to the PO spec, not substitute.

Q5: Small qty for prototype?
A: Cut lengths accepted, no forced full-stick buy on stock gauges. Setup stated transparently.

Q6: Can you match previous heat?
A: Send old heat No.; check live shelf. If gone, propose equivalent heat with full 3.1 for QA review pre-cut.

Q7: Flare-ready end — how clean?
A: Deburr inside+out, no oxide, argon-weld ready. Bright-annealed surface default for hydraulic.

Q8: Hydrostatic test pressure?
A: Per ordered spec (B338 ~50% min yield basis) or your line proof pressure — stated in quote, not assumed.

Q9: Lead time?
A: In-stock ann condition, confirmed PO → dispatch per stock workflow. CWSR / non-std wall → mill schedule quoted honest.

Q10: Sample before flight-line use?
A: 1–2 cut pieces from same heat at courier cost; your MRO/metallurgy signs final acceptance.
