Titanium Rod & Bar Guide

Titanium Rod, Bar & Billet Guide: Grades, Sizes, Machining Stock and Forging Feedstock

Titanium rod and bar are the starting point for thousands of machined components—from aerospace fasteners and medical implants to pump shafts and valve bodies. Choosing the right grade, diameter, surface condition and tolerance at the quoting stage prevents scrap, rework and delivery delays downstream.

Rod vs Bar vs Billet — What's the Difference?

  • Rod: Smaller diameters (3–50 mm), usually round, supplied in straight lengths or coils for wire drawing
  • Bar: Larger diameters (50–200 mm), often peeled or ground for machining
  • Billet: Large cross-section (up to 350 mm), used as forging feedstock

Size Range

  • Diameter: 3–350 mm
  • Length: up to 6,000 mm
  • Surface: black (hot-rolled), peeled, ground, or bright polished

Stock: ~200 tons including billet for forging and machining stock.

Grade Selection for Rod and Bar

Grade Best For Key Notes
Gr2 General corrosion service, light machining Good weldability, moderate strength
Gr5 / TC4 Aerospace, medical, high-stress parts Ti-6Al-4V; heat treatable to 895+ MPa
Gr7 Reducing acid, chloride environments Gr2 + Pd for enhanced corrosion resistance
Gr12 Chemical processing, moderate high temp Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni alloy
Gr23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) Medical implants, surgical devices Extra low interstitial for maximum biocompatibility

Standards

  • ASTM B348 — Titanium and titanium alloy bars and billets
  • AMS 4928 — Titanium alloy bars for aerospace
  • AMS 2631 — Ultrasonic inspection of Titanium Bars
  • GB/T 2965 — Chinese standard for Titanium Bars

In-House Saw Cutting

Rod and bar are sawn to length in-house. This means:

  • Prototype quantities (1–5 pieces) are workable
  • One-off machining blanks ship without a mill minimum
  • Volume orders are sawn to optimize yield

Peeling to tolerance and ultrasonic inspection are available on request.

Typical Applications

  • CNC machined parts for aerospace and defense
  • Fastener and bolt stock (hex, round, threaded)
  • Medical and dental components (Gr23 for implants)
  • Pump shafts and valve bodies for chemical service
  • Forging feedstock for closed-die and open-die forgings
  • Sporting goods (bicycle frames, golf club heads)

How to Quote

Send:diameter × length × grade × quantity × surface condition

Example:Dia 50 mm × 3000 mm, Gr5, peeled, 20 pcs, ASTM B348

We confirm nearest stock size and cutting allowance within 8 working hours.
