Titanium Tube & Pipe Buyer's Guide: Seamless, Welded, Condenser and Heat Exchanger Tubing Explained
Sourcing titanium tube looks simple on paper—you need a certain outside diameter, wall thickness and length. In practice, the wrong grade, heat treatment, or testing specification can cause a tube bundle rejection that delays an entire plant shutdown. This guide covers what procurement and engineering teams need to specify correctly the first time.
Seamless vs Welded Titanium Tube
Both types are stocked and supplied, but they serve different applications:
-
Seamless tube (ASTM B338): No weld seam. Preferred for high-pressure, high-temperature and safety-critical services. Manufactured by extrusion or rotary piercing.
-
Welded tube (ASTM B862): Formed from strip and longitudinally welded. More economical for larger diameters and less critical services where pressure permits.
Condenser and Heat Exchanger Tubing — The Most Common Application
The majority of titanium tube enquiries are for shell-and-tube heat exchangers, surface condensers and seawater-cooled exchangers. The two most requested sizes in our inventory are:
-
19.05 mm OD (3/4") × 0.5–1.2 mm wall
-
25.4 mm OD (1") × 0.7–1.65 mm wall
These sizes cover most power plant condenser retube projects and marine heat exchanger bundles.
Size Range and Availability
-
OD: 3–114 mm
-
Wall thickness: 0.5–10 mm
-
Lengths: random, fixed, or cut to your U-bend or straight length requirement
-
Forms: straight lengths, U-bends, coils on request
Stock: ~80 tons including Gr2 condenser tube in the sizes above.
Grades and When to Use Each
-
Gr1: Maximum corrosion resistance, excellent for forming into U-bends
-
Gr2: The workhorse grade for heat exchangers and condensers
-
Gr5 (TC4): High-strength applications where weight matters
-
Gr7: Enhanced crevice corrosion resistance in reducing acids
-
Gr9: Cold formable, good for hydraulic and instrumentation tubing
-
Gr12: Higher strength with good weldability
Testing and Finishing
Every tube is supplied with the following as standard or on request:
-
Pickled and annealed surface
-
Bright annealed finish available
-
Eddy-current tested (100% on heat exchanger tubing)
-
Hydrostatic tested per customer requirement
-
Ultrasonic testing on request
-
MTC EN 10204 3.1 with each shipment
Cut-to-Length Service
Tube is cut to your required length in-house. This means urgent replacement bundles for plant maintenance can be dispatched without waiting for a mill run. Send us the tube count, OD, wall, length and grade—we confirm stock and cut plan within 8 working hours.
Common Mistakes Buyers Make
-
Specifying only "titanium tube" without OD, wall and grade
-
Ordering full 6-meter lengths when 2.8-meter cut lengths are needed (extra freight, extra scrap)
-
Forgetting to specify eddy-current testing for heat exchanger service
-
Using Gr2 in a reducing acid environment where Gr7 is required
