Product Overview

Titanium Tubing for Chemical Process Equipment | Gr2/Gr7/Gr12, Picked by Medium — Not by Habit

Meta Description: Titanium tubing for chemical process equipment — Gr2 default, Gr7 for reducing acids, Gr12 for hot crevice/brine. ASTM B338/B861, media-based grade selection, ECT/hydro per PO, EN 10204 3.1 heat-traceable. Quote in 24h.

Overview — "Corrosion Resistant" Is Not a Spec

Every supplier says titanium "resists corrosion". True — but only in the right medium. Hand titanium tube to flowing seawater or dilute nitric acid and it runs 20+ years. Hand it to hydrofluoric acid, dry chlorine gas, or red-fuming nitric acid and the oxide film collapses. Chemical-plant procurement doesn't need another "titanium is great" paragraph — it needs a medium-first grade decision.

We are a Baoji Titanium Valley inventory holder. Gr2/TA2 rotates in stock for HX and process lines; Gr7/Gr12 quoted on heat-confirm; B338 (tube) and B861 (pipe) called out before cutting. We advise by fluid chemistry, not by upsell.

Grade Decision Starts With the Fluid, Not the Price

Grade Metallurgy Wins in Don't use when
Gr2 (R50400) CP Ti, O≤0.25% Seawater, brine, wet Cl₂, hypochlorite, dilute HNO₃, chlor-alkali, organic acids (oxidizing) Hot reducing acids (HCl/H₂SO₄), stagnant crevice >80°C, HF contact
Gr7 (R52400) Gr2 + 0.12–0.25% Pd Reducing acids, hot crevice, low-redox brine, CIP acid recycle General seawater (over-spec, Pd premium 30–40%)
Gr12 (R53400) Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni Hot brine (>200°C), under-deposit crevice, MED/MSF high-temp, higher ASME allowable stress Cold pure-water service (pay premium for nothing)
Gr1 Softest CP Ti Deep-draw, U-bend formability-first Where Gr2 yield is needed

Rule: Gr2 is the default for oxidizing/chloride service. Move to Gr7 only on reducing-acid/crevice flag; move to Gr12 on hot-crevice/brine economics. Don't buy palladium you don't need.[1,2](@ref)

Where Titanium Tubes Actually Sit in a Chemical Plant

  • Chlor-alkali: brine preheater, chlorine cooler, hypochlorite lines
  • Nitric acid dilution / nitrate lines (wet, oxidizing)
  • Organic acid reactors: acetic, citric, formic (oxidizing side)
  • Shell-and-tube coolers for chloride-bearing process streams
  • API overhead condensers with seawater/brine cooling side
  • Bleach / pulp-plant washer piping
  • Pharma CIP rinse loops (low ion leaching, clean ID)

Hard No-Go List (Write on the Drawing)

  • Hydrofluoric acid (HF) and fluorides — titanium dissolves; use Hastelloy/PTFE-lined
  • Dry chlorine gas — pyrophoric risk; only wet Cl₂ with moisture is safe
  • Red fuming nitric acid / anhydrous strong reducing blends — verify redox before spec
  • Concentrated boiling HCl/H₂SO₄ (no oxidizer) — Gr2 fails; Gr7 helps, but confirm concentration/temp

We ask for the MSDS / stream composition before quoting chemical service. A tube that "looks like Gr2" in a warehouse can fail in week 6 if the medium is wrong.

Tube vs Pipe — Standard Boundary (Again, Because QA Rejects Sloppy POs)

Grade-Upgrade Trigger Checklist (Send to Your Metallurgist)

  1. Medium pH & redox: oxidizing or reducing?
  2. Cl⁻ concentration + temperature (stagnant crevice risk?)
  3. Acid name + concentration + boiling point
  4. Shutdown CIP chemistry (HCl/H₂SO₄/NaOH cycle?)
  5. Velocity + solids (erosion at inlet?)
  6. Code: ASME VIII / PED / GB150 — dual cert needed?

If Q2+Q4 flag hot reducing acid → Gr7. If Q2+temp>200°C → Gr12 economics. Otherwise Gr2.

Cut / End / Pack for Chemical MRO

  • Square cut, ID/OD deburr, no burr shedding into startup
  • Plain end default; bevel 37.5° for field GTAW on pipe
  • Both ends capped + PE sleeve
  • Clean bag + plywood crate (ISPM-15) + desiccant for long-sea
  • Tag = MTC heat No. = PL/crate label

FAQ — Titanium Tubing for Chemical Process Equipment

Q1: Can Gr2 handle sulfuric acid?
A: Only in oxidizing/dilute/short-contact conditions. Boiling concentrated H₂SO₄ with no oxidizer → Gr7 or non-titanium. Send concentration+temperature; we don't guess.

Q2: Is titanium OK for HF?
A: No. Hydrofluoric acid and fluorides attack titanium directly. Stop here, switch lining/alloy.

Q3: Wet chlorine vs dry chlorine?
A: Wet Cl₂ (with moisture) → Gr2 standard. Dry Cl₂ gas → fire/pyrophoric risk, not a titanium service.

Q4: Why not always Gr7 to be safe?
A: Pd premium 30–40% for zero gain in oxidizing seawater. Over-spec = wasted CAPEX with no reliability return.

Q5: Gr12 worth it?
A: Above ~200°C brine or under-deposit crevice — yes; higher allowable stress can thin wall and pay back. Cold service — no.

Q6: Tube or pipe for a reactor cooling coil?
A: Coil/HX bundle = B338 tube. Pressure transport to reactor = B861 pipe. PO must name it.

Q7: NDT scope for chemical HX?
A: Welded = 100% ECT + hydro; seamless = UT/ECT per PO. Flatten+flare on welded B338 sample.

Q8: Pharma CIP clean ID?
A: Degrease + DI rinse + dust-free pack; particle/ion-leach decl. on request. Not "sterile" claim.

Q9: Dispatch?
A: In-stock Gr2 + PO before 3 PM China time → same-day cut/dispatch. Sea FOB Shanghai; air for shutdown at buyer cost.

Q10: MTC real 3.1?
A: Mill-issued 3.1 from original mill's authorized inspection rep, heat-matched. Trader cert not passed as mill cert.
