Overview — Desalination Buys Uptime, Not Just Pipe

A desalination plant doesn't lose money on titanium pipe. It loses money on the day a seawater line pits through and the train trips offline. One MSF train down = thousands of m³ fresh water lost per hour. That's why Gr2 titanium became the default for seawater-contact piping and brine-side heat-transfer surfaces: the TiO₂ passive film reforms itself, so the material doesn't rely on a paint coat or cathodic system to survive.

We are a Baoji Titanium Valley inventory holder. Gr2 seamless pipe (ASTM B861) sits on rotating stock; B338 HX tube and Gr7 (Pd) backup grade quoted on heat-confirm. Cut-to-length, annealed, NDT per PO, EN 10204 3.1, seaworthy crate. We sell the downtime you don't have, not a miracle metal.

Pipe vs Tube — Name the Right Standard First

Function in plant Correct standard What we supply
Seawater intake / reject / pump suction-discharge ASTM B861 (seamless) / B862 (welded) Gr2 process pipe, SCH 10S/40S, cut-to-length
Brine heater / condenser / recovery tube bundle ASTM B338 Gr2 seamless & welded-and-drawn HX tube
Evaporator shell / tube sheet facing B265 plate + B898 clad optional Cross-link to plate/clad pages

B861 = piping that holds pressure. B338 = tube that transfers heat. Mixing them on a PO is the #1 reason desalination RFQs get kicked back by QA. We confirm the standard before cutting, not after.

Why Gr2, Why Not Wait for "Cheaper" Alloy

  • Seawater chloride 10,000–45,000 ppm → 316L pits, CuNi erodes at high velocity
  • Gr2 forms self-healing TiO₂ film; normal flowing seawater = passivated, not "coated"
  • MSF brine heater 110–120°C, MED 65–70°C, SWRO feed high-pressure → Gr2 covers most duties
  • Hot, stagnant, oxygen-starved crevice → Gr7 (0.15Pd) or Gr12 considered; we advise by medium, not habit
  • Density 4.5 g/cm³ → ~45% lighter than steel, smaller supports, cheaper install
  • Design life commonly 20–30 yr in real MSF/MED service; retubing rare if velocity/deposit control done right

Ready Stock Scope (Live Heat Confirmed Before PI)

Form Grade Range Status
Seamless pipe (B861) Gr2/TA2 1/2"–10" NB, SCH 10S/40S; OD 21.3–273mm Rotating stock
HX tube (B338) Gr2 OD 15.88/19.05/25.4/31.8mm, wall 0.7–1.2mm Common sizes rotating
Welded pipe (B862) Gr2 2"–12" NB, SCH 10S/20S Project-confirmed
Gr7 / Gr12 Pd / Mo-Ni alloy Per enquiry Heat-by-heat lead time
Length 6m mother / cut-to-length / beveled ends Same-day on in-stock gauge

Honest boundary: sub-SCH 10S thin-wall large OD and Gr7 full-range = draw/project order. We don't claim "all NB on shelf."

Technical Baseline (Gr2 / TA2, Annealed)

Parameter Value
Grade Gr2 (UNS R50400) / TA2
Standards ASTM B861 (pipe) / B338 (HX tube) / ASME SB-equivalent
Condition Annealed (vacuum), dead-soft for weld/expansion
Chemistry (max) Fe 0.30%, O 0.25%, C 0.08%, N 0.03%, H 0.015%
Mechanicals UTS ≥345 MPa / YS ≥275 MPa / Elong ≥20%
Schedule SCH 5S / 10S / 40S (ti light-wall common)
OD tol Per B861 class; cut length +3~6.4mm / −0
NDT ECT (tube) / UT + hydro (pipe) per PO matrix
Surface Pickled / bright annealed, iron-free handling

Where It Sits in the Plant (No Guessing)

  • MSF: brine heater tubes, recovery/heat-rejection condenser, seawater inlet manifold
  • MED: evaporator tube bundle, final condenser, distillate cooler shell-side contact
  • SWRO: high-pressure seawater feed pipe, energy-recovery cooling loop, chemical-dosing line
  • Brine reject line: titanium pipe beats CuNi on velocity + silt/erosion
  • Offshore: topside seawater cooling main, fire-water (where spec allows titanium)

Velocity note: titanium tolerates high flow, but intake screening + deposit control still matter — a sand-laden inlet will erode any metal at the tube mouth. We flag inlet sleeve/thick-wall transition in the quote if your velocity >3.5 m/s.

Gr2 vs Gr7 — When to Step Up

Condition Gr2 Gr7 (move up)
Flowing seawater, aerated Default Over-spec
Hot crevice / gasket line / stagnant Review deposit + velocity Recommended
Reducing-acid cleaning cycle Marginal Yes (Pd catalyzes repair)
Cost Lower +Pd premium

We don't auto-upsell Gr7. We ask for brine temp, pH dip, shutdown-cleaning chem, then advise.

Cut / Bevel / End Prep for Field Welding

  • Plain end (PE) square cut — default
  • Beveled end (BE) 37.5°±2.5°, J-groove on thick wall
  • Argon-backing-ready: clean oxide-free land, no carbon-steel contact
  • Plastic cap + PE sleeve until site fit-up
  • WPS qualified by your ASME/PED fabricator; we supply annealed tube + chemistry, not the procedure

Testing & MTC (Desalination QA Standard)

  • EN 10204 Type 3.1 — mill authorized inspection rep signs, heat-matched
  • Chemistry incl. interstitials (O/N/C/H/Fe) — numeric, not "complies"
  • Pipe: UT + hydrostatic (1.5× design when PO specifies) / pneumatic on request
  • Tube: 100% ECT on welded; seamless per PO NDT matrix
  • PMI spot-check available; confirms Gr2 vs Gr7 Pd distinction
  • 3.2 (SGS/BV/TÜV/DNV) witness at buyer cost
  • Tag = MTC = packing list = crate label. No heat swap.

Seaworthy Packaging (GCC/Africa/India Long-Sea)

  • Plastic end caps + PE sleeve on every length
  • Bundle with nylon sling (no carbon chain contact)
  • Plywood crate / steel-frame skid, ISPM-15 fumigated
  • Moisture barrier + desiccant
  • Heat-number tag outside + duplicate inside waterproof pouch
  • MTC pouch external, CI/PL/COO/MSDS in sealed envelope

FAQ — Titanium Pipe for Desalination

Q1: Is Gr2 enough for seawater, or do I need Gr7?
A: Flowing aerated seawater → Gr2 is the industry default. Hot stagnant crevice, reducing-acid CIP, or oxygen-starved pockets → Gr7. Send medium data; we advise, not upsell.

Q2: Pipe (B861) and tube (B338) — same thing?
A: No. B861 holds pressure in piping; B338 is heat-transfer tube in bundles. PO must name the right standard or QA rejects it. We confirm before cutting.

Q3: What sizes are truly on shelf?
A: Gr2 B861 SCH 10S/40S common NBs rotate in stock; B338 19/25.4mm tube walls 0.7–1.2mm common. Exact heat confirmed before PI — no "all NB ready" bluff.

Q4: Hydrostatic test pressure?
A: Per ordered spec (commonly 1.5× design pressure) or B861 basis when PO states it. Not assumed; written in quote.

Q5: Can you bevel for site GTAW?
A: Yes — 37.5° bevel, clean land, argon-fit. WPS still qualified by your fabrication shop.

Q6: Erosion at high velocity?
A: Titanium handles higher velocity than CuNi, but sand-laden intake still needs screening/inlet sleeve. We flag >3.5 m/s and propose thick-wall transition.

Q7: MTC real 3.1?
A: Mill-issued 3.1 from original mill's authorized inspection rep, heat-matched. Trader-signed copy not passed as mill cert.

Q8: Dispatch speed?
A: In-stock gauge + PO before 3 PM China time → same-day dispatch. Sea FOB Shanghai; air for shutdown at buyer cost.

Q9: Mixed pipe + tube + plate in one PO?
A: Yes — pipe/tube/plate/clad can ship in one crate plan; one PI, one MTC pack per heat.

Q10: Service life claim?
A: Real MSF/MED titanium bundles commonly run 20–30 yr; not "never replace." Life depends on velocity, deposits, cleaning chem — we state the condition, not a fairy tale.
