Product Overview

Nickel Bar for Thermal Processing Equipment | ASTM B160 N02200 / N02201, Furnace Fixture Stock, 315°C Grade Rule

Meta Description: Pure nickel bar (ASTM B160) for thermal processing equipment — Nickel 200 for ≤315°C, Nickel 201 (N02201, C≤0.02%) for sustained >315°C furnace fixtures, muffle supports, trays, agitator shafts. PMI per heat, EN 10204 3.1.

One Rule Before Everything Else: Temperature Picks the Grade

  • ≤315°C (600°F): Nickel 200 / UNS N02200 — economical, same corrosion profile
  • >315°C sustained: Nickel 201 / UNS N02201 — carbon capped 0.02%, no grain-boundary graphite precipitation
  • Graphitization is silent: above 315°C, 200's carbon precipitates as graphite at grain boundaries → ductility collapses, part looks fine until it cracks under load
  • 201 does not "add strength" — it removes the failure mechanism. That is why furnace people spec it.

Standard & Form

  • Spec: ASTM B160 / ASME SB-160 (Rod and Bar — not B161/B163, those are tube specs)
  • UNS: N02200 (200) / N02201 (201)
  • Forms: round bar, square bar, hex bar, flat bar, forged block, peeled/bright-drawn bar
  • Condition: annealed (default for thermal duty) / hot-rolled black / cold-drawn / stress-relieved

Stock Window (typical)

Parameter Range
Diameter (round) Φ3mm – Φ300mm; common Φ8/10/12/20/25/50mm annealed stock
Flat bar thickness 3-60mm × width 20-300mm, to drawing
Length 500-6000mm fixed, or cut per fixture drawing
Surface black hot-rolled / peeled / bright-annealed / ground
Temper annealed (M) default; cold-drawn for machined shafts

Stock confirm within 4 business hours with diameter + grade + qty.

Chemistry Gate (the only thing that separates 200 from 201)

Element N02200 N02201
Ni + Co (min) 99.0% 99.0%
C (max) 0.15% 0.02%
Fe / Mn / Si ≤0.40 / 0.35 / 0.35% same
Cu / S ≤0.25 / 0.01% same

If MTC carbon >0.02% → it is not 201. No tag wording overrides the heat analysis.

Mechanical (annealed, typical)

  • Tensile: ≥345-380 MPa (bar size dependent per B160)
  • Yield (0.2%): ≥83-105 MPa
  • Elongation: ≥35% (small dia), ≥30% (large section)
  • Density: 8.89 g/cm³; Thermal conductivity ~70 W/m·K
  • CTE ~13.3 µm/m·°C — size thermal growth into fits
  • Continuous service ceiling: 200 ≈315°C; 201 ≈600°C (oxidation becomes limiting above ~600°C in air)

Where These Bars Actually Go

  • Furnace muffle supports, radiant-tube hangers
  • Heat-treat trays, baskets, fixture rails, conveyor rider bars
  • Agitator / mixer shafts in hot caustic reactors
  • Valve stems, pump shafts for hot alkali service
  • High-temp fastener stock (bolts/studs/nuts) for evaporator flanges
  • Vacuum-furnace conductive shafts, non-magnetic fixture parts
  • Caustic evaporator internals operating 315-500°C

Machining Reality (shop-floor note)

  • Nickel work-hardens fast — sharp positive-rake tools, heavy feed, low speed, flood coolant
  • Cut below the work-hardened layer each pass
  • Annealed bar machines closer to 316SS, not carbon steel
  • Bright-peeled OD saves rough-turn time on CNC

QC Before Dispatch

  1. Heat cert EN 10204 3.1 — carbon verified (≤0.02% for 201)
  2. PMI/OES per lot — N02201 ≠ N02200 ≠ Alloy 400
  3. Diameter / straightness / length gauge full length
  4. UT on heavy forged block on request
  5. Heat No. = tag = MTC cross-link
  6. 3.2 (SGS/BV/TÜV) TPI PO-fronted, never back-built
  7. Export pack: VCI wrap + ISPM-15 crate + heat-number label

Real Boundaries (no overclaim)

  • Not a superalloy — above ~600°C continuous, oxidation (not strength) is the limiter
  • High-temp sulfur / low-melt sulfide atmosphere → excluded
  • Strong oxidizers (conc. HNO₃, wet Cl₂) → alloy review, not default nickel
  • 201 is chosen for temperature + ductility retention, not for higher tensile

FAQ — Nickel Bar for Thermal Processing

Q1: Why not just buy Nickel 200 for the furnace?
A: Below 315°C it is fine and cheaper. Above 315°C sustained, 200 graphite-embrittles — invisible until fracture. 201 costs a little more, removes the failure mode.

Q2: Is 201 "stronger" than 200?
A: Marginally lower tensile. Its value is ductility retention after long high-temp dwell, not higher strength.

Q3: Can you supply forged block / flat bar for fixtures?
A: Yes — round, flat, square, hex, forged block, all to ASTM B160, annealed default.

Q4: How do I prove it's really 201?
A: MTC carbon ≤0.02% + PMI/OES lot check. Carbon >0.02% = not N02201.

Q5: Welding filler for machined parts?
A: ERNi-1 / ENi-1; WPS per ASME IX F-No.41. No stainless filler.

Q6: Thermal growth allowance?
A: CTE ~13.3 µm/m·°C — a 1m bar grows ~4mm over 300K rise; fixture clearances sized accordingly.

Q7: Bright bar vs black bar?
A: Black = furnace-scale surface, structural; bright-peeled = machined finish, less shop cleanup.

Q8: Small maint qty OK?
A: Yes — short lengths / remnant packs handled, not ton-only.

Q9: HS code?
A: Nickel bar base 7505.20 band — Broker confirms by destination (not tube/plate code).

Q10: Biggest spec mistake?
A: Drawing says "pure nickel bar" with no UNS and no temp — shop ships 200, furnace runs at 420°C, fixture cracks in 6 months. Always write N02201 + >315°C on the PO.
