Product Overview

Gr7 Titanium Fittings for Corrosive Media | WPT7, ASTM B363, Ti-Pd, Crevice & Reducing-Acid Service

Meta Description: Gr7 (WPT7, Ti-Pd) titanium butt weld fittings for corrosive media — ASTM B363 + ASME B16.9, for hot chloride brine, wet chlorine, dilute HCl/H₂SO₄ reducing-acid service. Palladium stabilises passive film, lifts crevice threshold above CP-Ti limit. Pickled, bevel-capped, heat-traceable, EN 10204 3.1.

What "Gr7" Actually Means on the Tag

  • Grade 7 = WPT7 (ASTM B363 fitting designation) = UNS R52400
  • Commercially pure titanium + 0.12–0.25% Palladium
  • Base corrosion behaviour = Gr2; Pd catalyses repassivation of TiO₂ film
  • Weld with matching ERTi-7 filler to keep Pd in weld metal — or ERTi-2 where weld duty is secondary (stated in WPS)
  • Not a high-strength alloy (that's Gr5) — Gr7 is a corrosion-upgrade CP titanium

Why Upgrade From Gr2 to Gr7 (the honest trigger)

Failure mode Gr2 (WPT2) Gr7 (WPT7)
General corrosion in seawater Excellent Excellent (no added value)
Crevice corrosion, ambient seawater Rare Resistant
Crevice @ hot brine (>~80°C, low-flow/deposit) Risk rises with T/pH Threshold lifted sharply; attack needs far lower pH
Dilute HCl / H₂SO₄ (reducing) Limited Passive window extended
Wet Cl₂ / hypochlorite Good Good (Pd not required, but no penalty)
Cost Baseline Pd premium — pay only where duty justifies

Engineering rule: Gr7 earns its premium when the limiter is crevice temperature or reducing-acid excursion — not general seawater.

Where Gr7 Fittings Belong

  • MSF/MED brine heater outlets, tube-sheet crevices, hot concentrated chloride
  • Acid recovery lines (dilute HCl / H₂SO₄ with known concentration+temperature)
  • Chlor-alkali: wet chlorine, hypochlorite, brine saturation loops
  • Geothermal chloride brine above CP-Ti crevice threshold
  • Pharma/chem skids with acid-dose upserts and dead-leg risk
  • Any line where process upset can drive low pH + hot chloride in a crevice

Where Gr7 Is NOT the Answer

  • Hydrofluoric acid / fluoride-bearing acidic streams → red line, titanium excluded
  • Dry chlorine gas → excluded
  • Red fuming nitric → excluded
  • Ambient seawater intake / SWRO permeate → Gr2 is correct, Gr7 overspent
  • Pure structural high-strength need → Gr5, not Gr7

Gr7 vs Gr12 (don't confuse the two)

Gr7 (WPT7) Gr12 (WPT12)
Alloying Pd 0.12–0.25% 0.3Mo + 0.8Ni
Crevice margin Highest (lowest critical pH for attack) Strong, slightly below Gr7
Reducing acid Best envelope Good, cheaper than Gr7
Cost Pd premium Moderate premium
Pick when Hot reducing acid / worst crevice Hot chloride economy route

Fitting Scope & Standards

  • 90°/45° LR elbow, SR on PO, 180° return
  • Equal / reducing tee, conc/ecc reducer, stub end A/B, cap
  • Material: ASTM B363 / ASME SB363 (WPT7)
  • Dimensions: ASME B16.9; stub end MSS SP-43
  • Bevel: ASME B16.25, 37.5°±2.5°, plastic-capped
  • Surface: pickled descale, no iron pickup, argon-clean ends

Welding Reality (site must hear this)

  • GTAW, dual-side argon purge + trailing shield, until metal cools below oxidation colour
  • ERTi-7 filler preserves Pd upgrade in weld; ERTi-2 acceptable where weld crevice duty is secondary — WPS decides
  • No steel brush, no carbon marker, no chloride residue on joint
  • Annealed after forming; stress-relief per code on cold-formed pieces
  • Gr7 welds like Gr2 — Pd does not change procedure family

Inspection & Cert

  • Pd content verified by PMI + chemistry — the one check that proves "it's really Gr7"
  • EN 10204 3.1: measured Pd, O/H/N/C, Fe, tensile
  • Heat-to-ingot traceability; weld seam marked on welded fittings
  • PT on body, RT/UT on welded construction per PO
  • 3.2 (SGS/BV/TÜV) PO-fronted

FAQ — Gr7 Titanium Fittings for Corrosive Media

Q1: Is Gr7 just Gr2 with a certificate?
A: No. Real Gr7 carries 0.12–0.25% Pd, confirmed by PMI + MTC chemistry. Without Pd verification, it's not Gr7.

Q2: When is Gr2 enough instead?
A: Ambient/aerated seawater, permeate, wet chlorine at moderate T, neutral chloride. Crevice threshold not exceeded → Gr2 is the right economy call.

Q3: How hot before Gr7 is justified?
A: CP-Ti crevice risk climbs above ~70–82°C depending on pH/deposits. Gr7 pushes the critical pH far lower — justify by T + pH + crevice geometry, not a single number.

Q4: Can Gr7 handle HCl?
A: In dilute, well-defined concentration + temperature with corrosion data — yes, far better than Gr2. Concentrated hot HCl or unknown mix → corrosion test / alternative alloy review.

Q5: Gr7 or Gr12 for hot brine?
A: Worst crevice / reducing upset → Gr7. Hot chloride economy → Gr12. Both beat Gr2 above the CP-Ti crevice line.

Q6: Weld with ERTi-2 okay?
A: Where weld metal sees no aggressive crevice, yes per WPS. For full Pd upgrade in weld zone, use ERTi-7.

Q7: HF present?
A: Red line. Titanium + fluoride acid = excluded. We flag before PI, not after.

Q8: Seamless or welded?
A: NPS 1/2–4 seamless rotating on PO; larger bored welded/fabricated, RT per PO. Construction declared on tag.

Q9: MTC real values?
A: EN 10204 3.1, Pd measured, heat-to-ingot.

Q10: HS code?
A: WCO 6-digit 8108.90 base; destination sub-heading via broker. Process statement supplied.
