Product Overview

Gr2 Titanium Heat Exchanger Stock for Chemical Plant | ASTM B338 R50400, Annealed, MTC 3.1

Meta Description: Gr2 (R50400) titanium heat exchanger tube stock for chemical plants — ASTM B338 seamless/welded, fully annealed, cut-to-length, PMI per heat, EN 10204 3.1, heat-number traceable after cutting. Oxidizing chloride / seawater / wet-Cl₂ / brine pre-heat. Gr7/Gr12 upgrade above crevice threshold.

Chemical Plant Stock Is Not "Whatever Is on the Shelf"

A real chemical-plant Gr2 stock program answers three questions before price:

  1. Is it dead-soft annealed? Elongation ≥20%, no cold-hard tube masquerading as "stock" — hard Gr2 micro-cracks during roll-expand and U-bend.
  2. Is the heat number intact after cutting? Cut-to-length must carry parent heat via marking transfer, not a generic "Gr2" tag.
  3. Is Gr2 actually right for the segment? Gr2 wins oxidizing chloride; it does NOT win hot crevices >80°C, reducing acid, dry Cl₂, or fluoride service.

Fast dispatch only matters if the tube survives hydraulic expansion on Monday morning. Stock without traceability is just shiny metal.

Where Gr2 Is the Correct Call

Chemical-plant duty Gr2 fit
Seawater / cooling water (≤80°C crevice limit) Excellent — immune to pitting/SCC in aerated chloride
Wet chlorine, hypochlorite, chlorinated brine Standard choice (oxidizing)
Brine pre-heat, salt evaporation (aerated, ≤80°C crevice) Yes
PTA / oxidizing acid streams (acetic + Cl⁻, oxidizing) Yes
CIP/SIP pharma/food loops Yes, inert, no metal-ion leach

Where Gr2 Must Step Aside (write this on the PO)

  • >80°C stagnant crevice / boiling concentrated brine → Gr7 (Ti-0.2Pd) or Gr12
  • Reducing acid (HCl/H₂SO₄ wash, deaerated) → Gr7/Gr12, not Gr2
  • Dry chlorine (<0.5% H₂O) → titanium unsafe; separate alloy review
  • HF / free fluoride → titanium excluded; Zr/C-276/PTFE-lined review
  • High-pressure thin-wall U-bundle → Gr9; high-temp brine strength → Gr12

Gr2 is the right answer for most oxidizing chloride duty — but "most" is not "all". A stock supplier who never asks your temperature and crevice condition is not helping you.

Stock Window (typical, confirm per inquiry)

Parameter Range
Standard ASTM B338 / ASME SB-338 (seamless or welded+annealed)
Grade Gr2 (R50400); Gr1/Gr7/Gr9/Gr12 parallel on request
OD 12.7 / 15.9 / 19.1 / 25.4mm common; up to 38mm+ on request
Wall 0.7 / 0.9 / 1.0 / 1.2 / 1.5mm typical
Length Straight 3-12m; cut-to-length ±1mm; U-bend to drawing
Condition Fully annealed (dead-soft), pickled / bright annealed, Fe-free surface
Ends Plain end standard; bevel for orbital weld on request

Stock confirm within 4 business hours with OD×wall + length + qty.

Why "Dead-Soft Anneal" Is Non-Negotiable

  • Cold-hard Gr2 looks identical, rolls poorly, cracks at tubesheet expansion
  • Proper vacuum anneal → elongation ≥20%, O≤0.25%, Fe≤0.30% (B338 limits)
  • U-bend to 1.5×OD feasible only with true annealed ductility
  • Outsourced poor-vacuum anneal leaves brittle oxygen skin → leaks after 3 weeks, not 3 years

QC Per Lot (stock or cut)

  1. ASTM B338 MTC EN 10204 3.1 — heat chemistry + tensile + flatten/flare (seamless) or reverse-flatten (welded)
  2. 100% eddy current (ET) or UT per B338 election — stated on PO, not "assumed"
  3. Hydrostatic per agreed pressure; helium leak test on request
  4. PMI on tube body — R50400 verified, not tag-trust
  5. Heat No. = end stamp = MTC; cut pieces keep parent heat by transfer map
  6. Surface Fe-free check; no carbon-steel contact in storage
  7. 3.2 (SGS/BV/TÜV) TPI PO-fronted for PED/offshore/turnaround-critical

Turnaround / Maintenance Use Case

  • Emergency re-tube: stock OD/wall dispatched fast, cut to bundle length
  • Spare tube reserve for scheduled shutdown
  • U-bend duplicate from old bundle drawing
  • Mix Gr2 stock + Gr7 upgrade section in one bundle (written justification)

Hard Boundaries (no overclaim)

  • Gr2 crevice safe ≈ ≤80°C aerated chloride; above that → Gr7/Gr12
  • No HF / free fluoride on titanium surface
  • Dry Cl₂ excluded — moisture required for passive film
  • 3.1 = mill QA sign; 3.2 = PO-fronted TPI, never back-issued
  • Recycled-billet / non-VAR melt without heat MTC → rejected internally
  • Annealing cert ≠ annealing reality; we anneal in-house vacuum, not broker it

FAQ — Gr2 Titanium Heat Exchanger Stock

Q1: How fast can stock ship?
A: Common OD/wall from inventory confirmed within 4h; cut-to-length dispatched in days. Custom wall or U-bend gets a firm slot — no fake "24h" on non-stock sizes.

Q2: How do I know the tube is truly annealed?
A: MTC tensile (elongation ≥20%) + vacuum-anneal record + U-bend PT. Hard tube fails flare/roll — we do not ship it.

Q3: Is Gr2 enough for my brine evaporator?
A: Aerated, ≤80°C crevice → yes. Boiling concentrated brine with stagnant gaps → Gr7. Reducing acid wash → Gr7/Gr12.

Q4: Cut pieces still traceable?
A: Yes. Parent heat number transferred to every cut piece; MTC + sub-tag map in dispatch dossier.

Q5: Seamless or welded stock?
A: Both B338-valid. Welded-annealed cost-effective for most bundles; seamless for high-vibration/high-pressure. PO states which.

Q6: Can Gr2 touch wet chlorine?
A: Yes — wet Cl₂ (with moisture) is a classic Gr2 duty. Dry Cl₂ (<0.5% H₂O) is excluded.

Q7: HF in cleaning CIP?
A: No. Any fluoride/HF contacts titanium surface → material review with alternative alloy.

Q8: What does "3.1 MTC" prove?
A: Heat-specific chemistry, tensile, NDE result, QA-independent signature, heat number cross-link. Not a generic grade letter.

Q9: HS code?
A: Titanium tube common heading differs from finished exchanger — Broker confirms by destination/form.

Q10: Biggest maintenance-buy mistake?
A: Buying "Gr2 stock" by price, no heat number, no anneal record, no crevice temp on PO. Re-tube leaks in week 3 — and the cheapest tube becomes the most expensive tube.
