Overview

What EN 10204 3.1 Actually Means

EN 10204 defines the format and verification level of an inspection document — it does not replace ASTM B265 or GB/T 3621 (those define the material spec). Under EN 10204:

• 3.1 = Inspection Certificate: actual test results from the specific heat/lot supplied, validated by the manufacturer's authorized inspection representative (independent of the production department)
• Contains specific chemistry + mechanical values for the delivered heat — not a "similar batch" result
• Signed/stamped by the mill's QA/inspection function
• No third-party witness required (that is 3.2)

In plain terms: a 3.1 MTC answers "Is this exact plate what you claim, and can you prove it from this heat?" — yes, with test data.

3.1 vs 2.1 vs 2.2 vs 3.2 (Buyer Short Version)

Most industrial projects (PED, ASME auxiliary material dossiers, desalination EPC) accept 3.1 as the standard level. 3.2 is only arranged when the PO or end-user spec explicitly demands a third-party counter-signature.

• Product identification: grade, standard (ASTM B265 / GB/T 3621), thickness×width×length, quantity
• Heat / cast number: the same number etched/tagged on the physical plate

Traceability Through Cutting (The Part Most Suppliers Break)

A certificate is useless if the heat number is lost during cutting. Our rule:

1. Stock plate tagged with heat number before entering cutting area
2. Cut pieces retain heat-number tag / etching after shear/waterjet
3. MTC heat number = physical tag number = PI line item
4. Multi-piece cuts from one mother plate: all pieces carry the same heat reference
5. If heat number is partially removed by machining, we re-mark by dot-peen/etch and note it on the dispatch report

No grade substitution. No "certificate swapped from another heat." Traceability is the whole point of 3.1.

Common Mistakes Buyers Should Avoid

• Writing "MTC" without stating EN 10204 type → defaults get messy; always write "3.1" or "3.2"
• Accepting 2.2 as 3.1 — different verification level, not interchangeable
• Cutting off the heat-number tag before inspection → traceability breaks
• Asking a trader to "issue" a 3.1 themselves → only the mill's independent inspection function issues a true 3.1; stockists supply the mill's 3.1
• Mixing heats in one bundle without separate MTC lines
