Custom Titanium Heat Exchanger Per Client Drawing | Build-to-Drawing, Grade-Fit Review, ASME VIII + TEMA

Meta Description: Custom titanium shell-and-tube heat exchanger built per client drawing — GA/DWG/STEP accepted, manufacturability + grade-fit review before production, ASME VIII Div.1 + TEMA, ASTM B338 tube / B265 tubesheet, roll+seal-weld joints, PMI per heat, EN 10204 3.1, 3.2 TPI PO-fronted. As-built MDR delivered with the unit.

"Built to Drawing" Means Review First, Machine Second

A drawing is a starting point, not a blank cheque. Before any titanium is cut, the drawing goes through three gates:

  1. Manufacturability gate — tube pitch vs U-bend radius, baffle spacing vs vibration, nozzle load vs support, TEMA class vs shell ID.
  2. Material-fit gate — is Gr2 right, or does the crevice temperature / reducing segment push to Gr7/Gr12? Drawing says Gr2; process says 95°C deaerated brine → we flag it, we don't bury it.
  3. Documentation gate — code, design pressure/temp, test pressure, NDE scope, cert level (3.1/3.2), TPI hold points all locked before release.

No silent substitutions. No "price first, chemistry later". The red-line return review is part of the deliverable.

What We Accept (format-agnostic)

  • PDF GA + process datasheet
  • DWG / DXF (2D tube layout, tubesheet drill, baffle cut)
  • STEP / IGES (3D for nozzle interference check)
  • Old unit photos + nameplate + measured tube length (no CAD? no problem)
  • Bundle-only scope (reuse existing shell) or full skid-mounted unit

Drawing Review Checklist (what we mark up)

Item Review action
GA dimensions Footprint, nozzle orientation, center-to-center verified against site constraint
Tube layout Triangular/square pitch, tube count, pass partition, U-bend radius vs OD
Tubesheet Hole tolerance, groove depth, clad vs solid, bolt circle match
Baffle / support Cut %, spacing, vibration (TEMA cross-flow velocity check)
Process data Fluid, Cl⁻, pH, fluoride (NO HF), max wall temp, upset temp
Grade call Gr2/Gr7/Gr9/Gr12 per segment; upgrade justified in writing
Code ASME VIII Div.1 + TEMA Class R/C/B; PED/EN 13445 on request
Joint Expand+seal weld, roll-weld clearance ≥3.2mm, argon backing
NDE/cert ET/hydro/PT/helium, 3.1 default, 3.2 TPI named at PO

No Drawing? Reverse-Engineer From the Old Unit

  1. Measure: shell ID, tube length, tube OD×wall, pitch, pass, support-plate count
  2. Trace: heat number on existing tube tag → cross-check MTC if available
  3. Photo: nameplate, nozzle face, channel cover, bundle extraction direction
  4. Rebuild: GA redrawn in-house, thermal re-check against stated duty
  5. Upgrade option: Gr2→Gr7 with written justification; keep external interfaces unchanged (one-for-one install)

Goal: same footprint, same flange, same nozzle — but a bundle that won't repeat the last failure.

Build Scope (flexible, not all-or-nothing)

  • Full exchanger: titanium tube bundle + tubesheet + Ti-lined/CS shell + nozzles + supports
  • Bundle only: straight or U-tube, replace into client's existing shell
  • Tubesheet only: solid Gr2/Gr7 or explosive-clad overlay, machined to drawing
  • Spares: spare tubes, tie rods, baffles, channel cover gasket set

Fabrication Baseline

  • Tube: ASTM B338 Gr1/Gr2/Gr7/Gr9/Gr12, seamless or welded-annealed
  • Tubesheet: ASTM B265 Gr2/Gr7, solid or Ti-clad on CS
  • Joint: hydraulic roll + autogenous GTAW seal weld, dual-side argon ≥99.999%
  • WPS/PQR: ASME IX qualified; mockup weld on request / PO-specified
  • Code: ASME VIII Div.1 calc + TEMA mechanical design
  • Surface: pickled/passivated, ferroxyl free-iron check, no carbon-steel contact

Delivery Package (MDR — not optional)

  1. ASME VIII calculation report + TEMA data sheet
  2. Approved-for-construction (AFC) drawing + as-built DWG
  3. WPS / PQR / WQR
  4. B338 + B265 MTC EN 10204 3.1 (heat-cross-linked)
  5. ET/hydro report, PT on seal welds, helium leak record (if specified)
  6. PMI report (XRF/OES per heat)
  7. Weld map + heat-traceability dossier
  8. U-1A data report (ASME-coded units) / Declaration of Conformity (PED)
  9. 3.2 TPI witness record (SGS/BV/TÜV/DNV) when PO-fronted

Hard Boundaries (no overclaim)

  • We do not weld-first-expand-later on titanium — sequence is fixed by physics
  • Gr2 crevice ~80°C limit stands; hot deaerated brine → Gr7, not thicker wall
  • HF / free fluoride excluded; dry Cl₂ needs separate review
  • Hot concentrated caustic >315°C → Nickel 201, not titanium
  • 3.2 TPI must be named at PO; never back-issued after fabrication
  • Drawing silence on chemistry ≠ permission to assume Gr2

FAQ — Custom Titanium Exchanger Per Client Drawing

Q1: Do you build exactly as drawn, even if the grade looks wrong?
A: We build to the approved drawing — but before production we issue a red-line review. If Gr2 is specified for a 95°C deaerated crevice, we flag it in writing. Client releases the call; we don't substitute silently.

Q2: What if I only have photos and a nameplate?
A: Enough to start. We reverse-engineer GA + tube layout, re-check thermal duty, and return a draw-down for approval before cutting metal.

Q3: Can you keep external interfaces identical for one-for-one swap?
A: Yes — flange face, bolt circle, nozzle centerline, support saddle position all matched; only the internals get upgraded.

Q4: Bundle-only supply — can it go into our existing shell?
A: Yes, provided shell ID, tubesheet groove and flange match. We verify against your drawing or measured shell before release.

Q5: How long from drawing to dispatch?
A: Review + AFC drawing in days; production slot confirmed after drawing approval. No fake "ready stock" on custom ASME units.

Q6: Is the MDR included or extra?
A: Included. Calc package, as-built, WPS/PQR, 3.1 MTC, NDE — part of shipment, not an add-on.

Q7: Can you handle PED + ASME double marking?
A: Yes, with notified-body coordination; TPI hold points planned at PO stage.

Q8: What is the biggest risk in build-to-drawing orders?
A: A beautiful drawing with no process chemistry. The drawing controls geometry; the stream controls grade. Both must be on paper before weld #1.
