GR2 vs GR5 Titanium: Which Grade Fits Your Project?

This week, over 60% of incoming inquiries asked the same question: "Do I need GR2 or GR5?" Here is a straight answer — no sales talk, just the facts.

At a Glance: GR2 vs GR5

GR2 (Commercially Pure Titanium): ~345 MPa tensile strength, excellent corrosion resistance, easy to weld and form. The workhorse of chemical processing.
GR5 / TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V): ~895 MPa tensile strength, high strength-to-weight ratio, moderate corrosion resistance, harder to machine and weld. The aerospace standard.

6-Dimension Comparison

Strength: GR2 is for static structures and pressure vessels at moderate stress. GR5 handles dynamic loads, fatigue, and high mechanical stress.
Corrosion Resistance: GR2 wins in most chemical environments — oxidizing acids, chlorides, seawater. GR5 is good but not better than GR2 in pure corrosion terms.
Weldability: GR2 welds like mild steel (with inert gas). GR5 requires strict preheat/interpass temp control and post-weld heat treatment for critical service.
Machinability: GR2 machines easily. GR5 is abrasive on tools — expect 30-50% longer cycle times.
Formability: GR2 bends, deep-draws, and cold-forms without issue. GR5 has limited cold formability; hot forming above 700°C required.
Cost: GR2 typically 15-25% less per kg than GR5 in plate form, and machining cost is significantly lower.

Selection Shortcut: 3 Questions

Question 1: What medium will it contact? Seawater, wet chlorine, oxidizing acid → GR2. Ambient air, fresh water, mild chemicals → either works, pick GR2 for cost.
Question 2: Does it carry structural load? Pressure, vibration, rotating parts, weight-critical assemblies → GR5. Static tank, piping, heat exchanger → GR2.
Question 3: Will it be bent or deep-drawn? Yes → GR2. No, it is a machined block or cut plate → GR5 becomes viable.

Common Mistake: "Stronger Is Always Better"

We see buyers specify GR5 for heat exchanger tubes — wrong move. GR5 costs more, machines slower, and offers no corrosion advantage over GR2 in those services. You pay twice: once for material, once for machining. GR2 does the job for 70% less total cost.

Reverse mistake: using GR2 for a rotating impeller or high-cycle fatigue part. It will fail. That is where GR5 earns its price.

Current Stock (Both Grades Available)

GR2 plate: 0.8-60mm, width 1000/1200/1500mm, 400 tons total inventory.
GR5 plate: 3-50mm, width 1000/1200mm, in stock and cut-to-size.
Both grades supplied with MTC, EN 10204 3.1 on request. Standards: ASTM B265, GB/T, GOST.

Need a Second Opinion?

Send us your working medium, temperature, pressure, and whether the part will be welded or machined. We will tell you which grade — and we will not upsell you to GR5 if GR2 does the job.
