Quality inspection method for TC4 titanium forgings


TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) titanium alloy forgings are widely used in core fields such as aerospace, marine engineering, and high-end pressure equipment due to their lightweight, high strength, corrosion resistance, and compressive strength. The forging process is prone to defects such as uneven grain size, microcracks, looseness, and inclusions, which directly affect the safety and service life of equipment operation. Therefore, standardized testing throughout the entire process is the core link in controlling the quality of TC4 titanium forgings. 1、 Raw material composition testing

Strictly control the quality from the source, use a direct reading spectrometer to take multi-point samples of TC4 billets, accurately control the core alloy elements of titanium, aluminum, and vanadium, strictly limit the impurity content of iron, carbon, etc., strictly control the hydrogen content ≤ 0.015%, effectively avoid the hidden danger of hydrogen embrittlement cracks, and ensure that the raw materials fully meet the national quality standards.

2、 Appearance and dimensional accuracy testing

100% full inspection of finished forgings, using strong light to screen for surface folding, overburning pits, burrs, and other defects. Fine patterns are rechecked through penetration testing. Using precision measuring tools and coordinate measuring instruments, verify product specifications, dimensions, parallelism, coaxiality, and other positional tolerances to meet precision assembly requirements.

3、 Double non-destructive testing
For special detection of hidden defects, PT penetration testing can accurately detect surface opening microcracks and pinholes, suitable for complex forgings with irregular shapes; UT ultrasonic flaw detection scans the entire interior of the workpiece to identify issues such as porosity, looseness, delamination, and inclusions. Aviation and high-voltage special forgings strictly follow the first level flaw detection standard to eliminate internal quality hazards.

4、 Mechanical properties and metallographic testing
Each batch of forgings is sampled from the furnace and subjected to room temperature tensile testing to ensure a tensile strength of ≥ 895MPa. Hardness and impact toughness tests are conducted to verify the load-bearing and fracture resistance properties. By observing the standard α+β biphasic structure through metallographic examination, process defects such as coarse grain size and compositional segregation are screened to ensure the mechanical stability and fatigue resistance of forgings.
